I believe it's similar to This issue, but after going through that thread I still couldn't get it to work properly.

Before I even started I made sure the Nick I'm using is unregistered and unused.
I set the net-type to 5.

I was then given this information:
"perhaps try connecting directly to a coldfront server instead of to irc.coldfront.net and having it pick a server for you"
But that returned the same results:

So, yeah, I don't have any port set, it just picks 6667. Should I set a specific one? I can't even get to the point of messaging 'hello'.

Any suggestions?

Port 6667 of subzero.coldfront.net appears open and available to me. Have you checked that there is no local firewall blocking your outbound connections?
