I edited that and..

#define HANDLEN 32 /* valid values 9->NICKMAX */

Which leads to it starting, but not getting on IRC, but with ./eggdrop -n, it connects perfectly...

No, it didn't lead to this. The reason is different. Please read and follow the instructions in this article:
